The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources

The world has a wide range of different energy sources. In 2018 fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, were responsible for more than 81 percent energy consumed. Renewables, like wind, solar power, hydroelectricity and biomass, make up for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is another 5 percent. Different countries employ different combinations of energy sources, in order to balance economic needs with environmental concerns.

Nature is a rich source of energy in a number of forms: sunlight, wind, waves, oceans and more. These primary sources transform into more efficient forms of energy, like electricity or heat, once they are harnessed. When these energy sources are exhausted, they turn into nonrenewable energy sources.

The environment is harmed by a variety of fossil fuels as well as some other energy sources that aren’t renewable. Oil mining, for instance can cause the destruction of our forests of the earth. Hydraulic fracture (fracking) can cause earthquakes and pollute the water. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burned which causes global warming.

Fortunately some of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Wind, solar and hydropower for instance, could produce electricity without having to search for fresh supplies.

Other sustainable energy sources are emerging, such as waves and tidal power. To be utilized on large scale, these sources of energy require efficient distribution networks. These must be built and operate with the use of non-renewable energy sources. These sources aren’t sufficient to meet the majority of our energy needs. It’s important to remember that the cost of renewable energy equipment have drastically decreased in recent years and efficiency is growing.
